Uses
Zithromax is useful for the treatment of various types of infections which are caused by bacteria, including sexually-transmitted diseases, infection of the ear, the skin, and the respiratory tract, bronchitis, tonsillitis, and pneumonia.
How to take Zithromax
Zithromax is an oral ingestion drug, which comes in liquid, capsule, and tablet form. It is normally taken once a day, within two to five days. Take the medication upon careful observation of the doctor's prescription. The capsule or tablet should be taken on an empty stomach, about an hour before or two hours after a meal, with a tall glass of water. Shake the liquid well before mixing the single dose evenly in two ounces of water and drinking all of it immediately.
Side effects
If symptoms of an allergic reaction or liver damage (severe fatigue, yellowing of the eyes or the skin, bruising or bleeding, nausea, and abdominal pain) are experienced, the user is advised to discontinue use and seek immediate medical help. If symptoms such as nausea, an increased sensitivity to sunlight, vomiting, rashes, diarrhea, vaginal yeast infection, abdominal pain, headaches, unusual dizziness, and fatigue are experienced, continue medication and consult with a doctor.
Drug precautions
Antibiotic medications may cause diarrhea, which can be a sign for new infection. If diarrhea has blood in it or is watery, seek medical help; do not take any medication for stopping the diarrhea unless otherwise instructed by a doctor. People under the treatment of Zithromax should also avoid being exposed to natural or artificial UV rays, as the drug can increase the sensitivity of the skin to such rays; apply sunscreen or wear protective clothing when going out under the sun.
Drug interactions
These drugs may affect the potency of Zithromax: nelfinavir; methysergide, dihydroergotamine mesylate, and ergotamine; digoxin; triazolam; erythromycin or clarithromycin; carbamazepine; lovastatin, cerivastatin and atorvastatin; phenytoin; carbamazepine; cyclosporine; calcium channel blockers; HIV medication; warfarin; theophylline; and alprazolam, triazolam, diazepam, and midazolam.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms include abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Seek medical help in such instances.
Missed dose
Take a missed dose as soon as possible, as long as the next on is not due for some time. Otherwise, follow the regular intake schedule. Avoid taking double doses of the drug.
Storage
Store tablets in room temperature, liquid in temperatures between 5°-30°C, inside a sealed container.
