Uses
Fosamax is used for the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, or steroid-induced osteoporosis. It also used as treatment for Paget's bone disease.
How to take Fosamax
Fosamax is available in tablets of 10mg to 70mg, and 70mg oral solution. These are orally ingested, once every morning, 30 minutes before a meal or intake of other medications. It may be taken with water, but not with dairy products, mineral water, milk, or orange juice. The tablets are swallowed whole; the liquid mixed with water or administered as is. User should stand or sit upright after intake to get the full dose of the medication.
Side effects
Discontinue use and seek medical help with the following: chest pain; jaw swelling, pain and numbness; difficulty in swallowing; severe pain in the muscles, joints, or bones; worsening heartburns; and pain beneath the ribs or on the back. Maintain intake and consult with a doctor with the following: slight heartburn and upset stomach; constipation, diarrhea, and gas; headaches, dizziness, and weakness; joint swelling and pain; back pain; and swelling on the hands and feet.
Drug precautions
Potential users with problems in swallowing, those who have esophageal ulcers or disease, conditions which cause low calcium levels within the body, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, digestive problems, and inability to stand and sit upright for thirty-minute intervals should inform their doctor of such conditions; they may require an adjusted or regulated dose, or are unable to take it. The same applies for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Drug interactions
Users should take antacids, medicines which contain minerals, and supplements after thirty minutes of Fosamax intake. Those who take aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as piroxicam, celecoxib, naproxen, diclofenac, ketorolac, diflunisal, ketoprofen, ibuprofen and indomethacin should consult a doctor before taking Fosamax.
Overdose
Indications of overdose include upper gastrointestinal side effects, hypocalcemia, and hypophosphatemia.
Missed dose
Missed doses of Fosamax will not affect the treatment. In case of a missed dose, skip the intake and proceed with the next dose on the following day. Never take two simultaneous doses of the drug. If the medication is taken once a week, take a missed dose the succeeding morning after it is remembered, as long as it is in accordance with the regular intake schedule.
Storage
Store Fosamax in a tightly-sealed container, between 15 and 30°C.
