Uses
Flonase is used for relief from multiple symptoms of the nasal cavity, including an itchy and runny nose, congestion, and sneezing. As a topical application, it is administered with the use of a metering and atomizing spray mechanism.
How to take Flonase
The best results of the medication are obtained through regular use, or as is prescribed by a doctor. The advised starting dose for adults is two sprays (100 mcg) in each nostril, once a day, or morning and evening treatments of 50 mcg per nostril, twice a day. After a few days the dosage may be reduced by half. Some users with seasonal allergies can take 200 mcg of daily treatment for control of symptoms.
Side effects
Moderate adverse effects include swelling of the throat, face, tongue and lips, and hives; mild effects may include headaches, slight nose bleeding, sores within and around the nose, coughing, and sore throat. Get immediate medical help if extreme nose bleeding is experienced; also, sores within the nose which won't heal, symptoms of the flu such as fever, body aches, and chills.
Drug precautions
Potential users should inform their doctor if they are under any form of viral, fungal, and bacterial infection, as the potency of the drug may inhibit the body's capability in warding off infections. People under the treatment of Flonase should also avoid close proximity from others who are sick or are carrying an infection; the body can easily contract them, as the blood cells may be weakened by the drug. Those exposed to the measles, or to chicken pox should immediately undergo preventive measures with their doctor.
Drug interactions
Flonase may interact with drugs containing ketoconazole, or medications for HIV treatment which contain ritonavir.
Overdose
An overdose of steroids such as Flonase may lead to a thinning of the skin, a decrease in sexual interest, easy bruising, impotence (in men), changes in the location or the shape of fat in the body (such as the waist, face, back, and neck), menstrual problems in women, and an increase in acne outbreaks or facial hair.
Missed dose
Take a missed dose as soon as possible, provided that the next one is not nearly due; otherwise follow the schedule as indicated.
Storage
Store the drug in temperatures between 4-30 °C.
